FRATERNITY
ANNOUNCES SUPPORT EFFORTS FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
Philadelphia,
PA, September 2005 - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., like so many other
organizations, is making efforts to support victims of the devastation resulting
from Hurricane Katrina. While the fraternity's initial efforts will focus on providing
support to its members and their families who were affected, it will also offer
general support through the general agencies, such as the Red Cross, as well.
The fraternity has secured access to the private plane of one of its members and
is expected to send its Executive Director, Richard Lee Snow, and National Social
Action Chairman, David L. Hardrick, to Baton Rouge and possibly Mobile, AL, where
it has a network of members mobilized and prepared to distribute goods and funding.
Having established a Relief Fund, members have graciously begun to offer funds
and at present the total is over $5,000 and growing. Kappa's Grand Board has approved
a total of $50,000 ($25,000 each directed to the New Orleans and Gulfport areas,
respectively). It is also expected that the Fraternity's Foundation, its 501(c)3
subsidiary, will match those funds. To
make contributions to the Relief Funds, log onto the fraternity website (www.kappaalphapsi1911.com).
To make direct contribution of goods, please forward to the following: Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc., Baton Rouge Alumni Chapter, 636 Harding Blvd., Baton Rouge,
LA 70813l. Goods may also be forwarded to the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter,
1708 S Street, NW, Washington, DC 20011; and the Fraternity's Headquarters, 2322
N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19132. "Our
Brothers must know that they can depend on us during these challenging times.
Kappa will look at all of its resources and will provide any and all available
funds as direct support to our members and to others as needed. While our members
in need are foremost in our efforts, we encourage our members to offer support
through any of the agencies that are providing funding to those in need,"
said Samuel C. Hamilton, Grand Polemarch (CEO). He added further, "we will
also join the efforts of other organizations such as the NAACP, National Urban
League, National Coalition of Black Civic Participation, National Pan-Hellenic
Council, Inc. and others. This will require so many different efforts from so
many different organizations and individuals." Kappa is also working on the
local level with the American Red Cross and other such agencies. Thus
far, Kappa has received notice of two confirmed deaths of its members due to the
hurricane. As it prepares for the beginning of its new fiscal year October 1st,
it has vowed to make this its primary national service initiative for 2006.
Please
encourage all that would seek to help in this endeavor to
