Dr. Joseph Edward
Smith, a distinguished dentist in Jacksonville, Florida, joined the Chapter
Invisible on February 15, 2014 after a long illness. He was 76 years old and
resided in Jacksonville, Florida.
graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1956. He later
attended Allen University where he was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity in 1957 at the Beta Rho Chapter. After graduating from
college Brother Smith enlisted in the United States Army.
While in the army he
was awarded Marksman (Rifle M-14), 1st Class Gunner, and a
Parachutist Badge.Brother Smith worked
at the United States Treasury Department in Washington D.C. There in the District of Columbia, he earned
a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University in 1970.
Upon graduation from
Howard, Brother Smith began his dental career at Roxbury Comprehensive
Community Health Center Dental Clinic in Affiliation with Boston University
Graduate School of Dentistry, from 1969 to 1974.
In 1975, Brother
Smith followed his dream of being an entrepreneur and opened his dental
practice in Jacksonville, Florida.
priorities were God first, family second, and career third. He was an active member and trustee of New
Bethel A.M. E. Church, a member of the National Dental Association, and Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated.
Brother Smith is
survived by his wife, Mildred Burgess- Smith, two sons, Dr. Daryl Edward, Dr
Ivan Joseph and a daughter Jomila Carol, one brother Clifford, four
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
