Lonnie E. Moore, Sr.
Life came to an end for Mr. Lonnie Edward Moore, Sr., Wednesday morning, February 26, 2014 at the Select Specialty Hospital, Jackson, MS. There will be a wake service Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. and the funeral services will be Friday, March 7, 2014 at Central United Methodist Church, 500North Farish Street at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. Lonnie Edward Moore, Sr., a native of the Hopewell Community of Philadelphia, MS located in Neshoba County. He was the seventh of eleven children born to the late Ben Wheeler and Cora Moore.
Mr. Lonnie Moore, Sr. received his early education at Hopewell School in Philadelphia, MS. He was drafted into the Navy in 1943 and served in World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. In the fall of 1946 Lonnie enrolled in Alcorn A&M College, now Alcorn State University located in Lorman, MS. He earned his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education. Lonnie was a member of the 1948 South Central Athletic Conference "Original Flying Five" Alcorn A&M College Basketball team. He received his Master of Education from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, AL. He had done further study at other institutions of high learning.
Lonnie had a successful Teacher/Coach Career, starting at Hopewell School in Philadelphia, MS; in Walthall County, MS; and Rosa Scott in Madison County, MS. His remaining professional employment years were as a Vocational Counselor with the Division of Disability Determination of the Mississippi State Department of Education.
Lonnie's Christian life began at Hopewell Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, MS. He has given leadership to and been a member of various ministries and committees of the United Methodist Church, on the local, District and Conference levels.
His memories and love will be missed by his wife of sixty-two years, Emma Moore; two devoted sons: Lonnie Edward Moore, Jr. of Jackson, MS; and Stanley Carl Moore of Inglewood, CA; Gloria Singleton that they helped to raise of Jackson, MS; grandchildren: Stanford Carlton Moore and Emily Renee Moore; sisters: Pearlean Moore of Philadelphia, MS; Alberta Smith of Okaloma, MS; and Juanita Harvey of Chicago, IL; sisters-in-law: Ella Ruth Moore of Philadelphia, MS; Vida Mae Moore of Jackson, MS; Albertha Moore, Minneapolis, MN and Rachel Farrish, Jackson, MS and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
