Grand Polemarch Special Mesage: Incident at UVA

LET’S STAY VIGILANT:
A BROTHER MAY BE VICTIM OF EXCESSIVE FORCE AT UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

In recent months we continue to hear reports of increased numbers of African American youth who are having altercations with law enforcement personnel. It is particularly apparent that some law enforcement personnel believe that their lives are in danger because the suspect happens to be African American. On the other hand we know that minimum force should be the norm, and that there should never be excessive force.  The subject of excessive force has become a dominant part of the national dialogue.

In a recent incident involving a student from the University of Virginia, many believe that excessive force may have been used once again. The governor of Virginia has ordered an investigation of the incident and we are hopeful that it will be fair.

The student, Brother Martese Johnson, was initiated at the University of Virginia, on March 10, 2013, at the Eta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  We certainly want to be vigilant to ensure that fairness prevails regarding our brother and all others that come before the bar of justice.

Yours in the Bond,

William "Randy" Bates Jr., Esq.
