Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® Condemns Flint, Michigan Water Crisis
Philadelphia, PA – February 10, 2016 –The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is joining other organizations
in condemning public officials for permitting the severe water crisis to occur in Flint, Michigan.
This crisis was facilitated by the signed order of state-appointed Emergency Manager, Darnell Earley, the
city of Flint, occupied by approximately 40,000 households of primarily Blacks and those living in or near
the poverty level, switched from Detroit’s water supply to the Flint River as primarily a cost-saving measure.
The crisis was exacerbated when state officials not only summarily dismissed the complaints of concerned
residents about the quality and safety of their water, but purposely tested it in such a way as to understate the
levels of lead within the water being supplied.
These official decisions were made, knowing that water from the Flint River lacked the corrosion-control
chemicals which existed within the Detroit water system. Therefore, water corroded the city’s pipes and
leached poisonous metals into the city’s water supply, in addition to bacterial contamination.
Virginia Tech University researchers discovered that lead levels in Flint water reached more than twice what
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would classify as hazardous waste.
Lead can negatively affect almost every organ within the body, and can result in miscarriages and fetal death,
and even small traces of lead in the blood of children can result in behavior and learning problems, lower IQ,
hyperactivity, slowed growth, and hearing problems.
The EPA has issued an emergency order for Flint under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
In 2010 the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation
and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights;
According to Thomas L. Battles, Jr., Grand Polemarch (CEO) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., “Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity firmly believes that in denying the citizens of Flint clean water the Michigan state
government committed a human rights violation which could have detrimental repercussions on Flint
residents, particularly its children, for years to come. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. strongly condemns the
denial of clean water as required by law to the people of Flint, Michigan and thus calls for Gov. Rick Snyder
to swiftly ameliorate this public health crisis for which he and his administration are directly responsible.”
As a result of this severe crisis, Battles stated that “Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. urges its membership to
call on Gov. Snyder, via letters and otherwise, to resolve this disaster by repairing or replacing Flint’s water
system immediately and for the federal government to ensure that these actions are executed through
financial support and oversight.”
