ALPHA PSI ADDRESSES FINANCIAL LITERACY ACROSS AMERICA'S COLLEGE
CAMPUSES
(Philadelphia, PA) February 2008 - In an effort to effectively
prepare undergraduate students with a solid and stable understanding
of credit card abuse, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has
partnered with the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees,
National Foundation of Credit Counselors, and the Council
of Presidents on behalf of the National Pan-Hellenic Council
to actively promote the Credit Abuse Resistance Education
Program (CARE) and a new college financial literacy program
called Greeks Learning to Avoid Debt (GLAD).
The initiative was conceived by Grand Polemarch Dwayne Murray,
and at the suggestion of Frankie Heyward, Vice Polemarch of
the University of Delaware Chapter, the Nu Xi of Kappa Alpha
Psi, the program found its name "Greeks Learning to Avoid
Debt." Under the CARE umbrella of financial literacy programs,
the Fraternity and its partners are working together to encourage
members of the bankruptcy community, including bankruptcy
judges, bankruptcy trustees, and bankruptcy attorneys, to
teach young adults personal financial responsibility and budgeting
skills.
"College students graduate with a tremendous amount of debt,"
Grand Polemarch Murray said, "Not just the tens of thousands
in student loans but an average of $5000 in credit card debt,
as well." GLAD is specifically designed to help students graduate
with a firm financial footing.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has taken the lead on behalf of
the National Pan Hellenic Council in scheduling presentations
on college campuses and local communities. Its members will
coordinate all on-site requirements. The GLAD program coordinators
have prepared forms, presentations and handout materials which
can be made available to all volunteer presenters. Each GLAD
presentation is intended to last no longer than fifty minutes,
including a short video and power point presentation.
With the assistance of the appointed local chapter advisors,
undergraduate chapters throughout the fraternity have been
working diligently towards the hosting of GLAD Program during
the Spring of 2008.
We are proud to announce the following universities will
be hosting the GLAD Program in the month of February:
Louisiana State University - February 11th
University of North Texas - February 11th
Midwestern University (TX) - February 12th
Widener University (PA) - February 13th
University of Southern Mississippi - February 18th
Millersville, Lincoln Univ. & Temple Univ. - February 19th
