GRAND BOARD POLICY on MIKs, TIKs, and KITTENS
ADOPTED ON FEBRUARY 11, 1978
The Board's Policy as adopted in 1978 regarding MIKs, TIKs and KITTEN
groups is still in effect and in view of the numerous requests we
have been receiving regarding such groups; we felt it necessary
to circulate this information in this bulletin.
MIKs, TIKs, KITTENS
Some chapters have pre-pledge groups known as MIKs and/or TIKs,
and also Kappa KITTENS. These are NOT affiliated
organizations of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and chapters must
discontinue any sponsorship and/or affiliation with such groups.
We have evidence of several instances where MIKs and/or TIKS have
been hazed and chapters claimed innocence because they "were
not hazing pledges."
With KITTENS, there are other evidences of misuse and abuse. It
is our understanding that in some instances, KITTENS have been recruiting
members, conducting initiations and otherwise functioning as an
affiliate of Kappa Alpha Psi. Kappa Alpha Psi has always supported
the Fraternity System and unfair competition against Sororities
has the effect of undermining the Greek Letter System. This does
not mean that a chapter cannot have a "Kappa Court" or
alliances with Sororities, but we must discontinue groups such as
MIKs, TIKs, and KITTENS.
It is therefore the policy of the Grand Board of Directors, that
Chapters shall terminate affiliations with MIKs, TIKs or other similarly
constituted groups, and also the KITTENS.
Chapters shall take steps to terminate these affiliations immediately,
and any Chapter retaining affiliation or recognition of such groups
after September 30, 1978 will have their Chapter Charter recalled.
We call upon Chapters to immediately take steps to comply with the
spirit and intent of this directive, as it has been adopted by the
Grand Board of Directors on advice of Counsel as being in the best
interests of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
